Kochi: With its lush green paddy fields, swaying coconut trees, picturesque vineyards, organic vegetable garden and spice plantation, Cumbum Valley near Thekkady is a travellers’ paradise. Set in the heart of the serene Cumbum Valley, at Lower Camp, is Harvest Fresh Farms, a certified organic farm, which has emerged as a popular farm tourism destination along one of the most visited tourist circuits in Kerala.
Located in the midst of pristine nature yet close to small towns and the famous Periyar Tiger Reserve, the 35-acre farm land is a short 15-minute drive down from Kumily, Thekkady. For those coming from Kochi city, it is approximately a four-hour drive. What makes it unique are the toxic-free organic fruits and vegetables being cultivated there. Drop in, and you will find that it is a visit that heals. An aesthetically laid out herbal garden with more than 150 herbs planted with care will provide you a rejuvenating experience. “This is an idyllic weekend getaway which gifts you an opportunity to unwind and develop a liking for farming,” says Kurien Jose (Jr), CEO, Harvest Fresh Farms.
It has three well-appointed rooms fitted with modern amenities and a separate living room with kitchen attached. Each of these aesthetically arranged cottages has comfortable beds and a bathroom, and an earthy touch complementing the rich surrounding. Visitors can take a bullock cart or tractor ride to the organic farm that grows pomegranate, papaya, grapes, mango, passion fruit, sapota, coconut and jackfruit. One can also climb any one of the two watchtowers on either side of the farm and enjoy the splendid view of the entire Cumbum Valley. The farm is equipped with bicycles too for all age groups. Visitors can also opt for jeep safari covering the farm and nearby locations such as the Cumbum market, Lord Pennycuick Museum, vineyard and Kumily town.
Guests have the unique opportunity to learn about organic farming, feed the farm animals, relish commanding views of the valley flanked by mountains and enjoy a sumptuous meal prepared using fresh organic produce. “We ensure that the farm follows best practices in the industry. We use bio gas for cooking purposes and also compost organic waste to manure,” he adds.
