Technopark Witnesses Sale of ‘Karthumbi’ Umbrellas from Attapady


Thiruvananthapuram: In an initiative to help the mothers at Attapady tribal village in Palakkad district, Prathidhwani – the socio-cultural organisation of Technopark, has organised the sale of ‘Karthumbi’ umbrellas at the Nila and Thejaswini buildings. Through this three-day sale, techies can directly buy umbrellas from the manufacturers themselves.

Greeshma from UST Global and Sreejith Gangadharan of Toonz Animation inaugurated the sales at Thejaswini and Nila buildings respectively by buying the umbrella from Lakshmi Unnikrishnan from Attapady. Employees at Technopark who wish to buy Karthumbi umbrellas and those who have already booked the item can buy from the Karthumbi Sales Counter at Technopark. Around 200 IT professionals bought the umbrella on May 23, the opening day of the sale. G Vijayaraghavan, the first CEO of Technopark, and Vishnu J P, CEO, iBoson Innovations had jointly placed an order for 300 umbrellas.

The umbrellas have been jointly manufactured by a tribal organisation called ‘Thumb’ and an online group, ‘Peace Collective’. Around 100 tribal women have been engaged in the making of the umbrellas, which will help build a strong financial foundation in the tribal belt of Attapady. They get a daily wage of Rs. 500 – 700 from selling the threefold umbrellas. While a threefold-umbrella costs around Rs 330 in the market, Prathidhwani offers the umbrellas to Technopark employees at a rate of Rs. 300. Friday is the last day of sale at Phase Three of the Park.
