Kochi: As part of the government initiative to turn IT Parks into green campuses, Infopark will soon be powered by renewable energy.

According to Infopark authorities, a 500 KW solar plant will be installed soon atop the building of Infopark Phase 2. Infopark CEO Hrishikesh Nair said the tender has been floated and the solar project will help light up common areas  – including streets and parking spaces. “It is always better to have our own solar power than purchasing electricity. A solar power plant with 500 KW capacity will be first installed in Phase 2 building. The electricity from the plant will help light up common spaces, including streets and parking spaces,” he said.

The solar power plant and connection to the grid will enable Infopark to save a good amount on its power bill each year. Officials further said that around 2,500 square feet of space has been identified for the installation of the plant. “Even though it will be a small power plant, it has its own relevance as we can turn a portion of our space into an eco-friendly energy generating unit,” they said.

As per the tender documents, the power plant will be installed with a fund of Rs. 3.5 crore. The work will be completed within 150 days, once the contract is awarded. After Infopark, a solar plant will be installed at Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram. Besides solar plants, authorities are also planning to construct rainwater harvesting facilities and eco-friendly waste disposal system on IT campuses.
