Kozhikode: The Malabar River Festival will be held from July 20 to 23. Kayakers from different parts of the world have started arriving at Kodencherry near Thusharagiri in the district to be part of South India’s only extreme adventure competition organised on behalf of Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society by Kerala Kayak Academy and Madras Fun Tools in association with Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council, district administration and district panchayat.

After a highly successful event last year, the Malabar River Festival promises to be ‘bigger, better and harder’ this year. With loads of prize money at stake, about 150 participants from all over the world will be taking up the challenge. This year’s competition will also feature events for beginners, intermediate kayakers and a special category of prizes for the best paddlers from the subcontinent.

Kayakers from New Zealand, Germany, Nepal, Italy, US and Denmark have already arrived at Kodencherry and started practice sessions. “The kayakers have also taken up the responsibility of training the local people here,” said U V Jose IAS, District Collector, Kozhikode. The kayaking festival will be mainly conducted at three spots; Chali puzha in Kodencherry panchayat, Iruvazhinji puzha in Thiruvambadi panchayat and Meenthuli puzha in Chakittapara panchayat. Rafting, one of the major attractions of the festival, will take place at Thusharagiri.The official inauguration of the festival will be conducted on July 21.

On July 19, a reception will be organised for international kayakers at Mananchira Sports Council Hall. Earlier, the organising committee headed by District Collector held a meeting to discuss the preparations for the festival.
