KMRL Plans Multi-level Parking Facilities at Major Metro Stations

Kochi Metro, KMRL

Kochi: In a bid to resolve the parking woes of commuters, the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) will set up multi-level parking facilities at major stations of the Kochi Metro. In the initial phase, three such facilities will be set up at Aluva, Palarivattom and MG Road.

According to KMRL authorities, tenders will be floated soon. “Multi-level parking facilities will be constructed at major metro stations. Initially, three such facilities will be set up. We have already commenced the document preparation in connection with the tendering process,” said Reshmi C R, Senior DGM, Corporate Communications, KMRL.

Though Kochi Metro enjoys good commuter flow ever since it started commercial operations on June 19, the lack of sufficient parking facilities at most of the stations has turned out to be a major worry. To compound the issue, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has denied permission to the metro authorities to use its vacant plot near Palarivattom metro station.

The public have also been complaining about the parking tariff of KMRL at the present parking lot near Aluva station. Here the fee for car parking is fixed at Rs. 30 for two hours, while it is Rs.15 for two-wheelers. After two hours, cars will be charged Rs. 15 per hour, while the two-wheeler owners will have to shell out Rs. 5 per hour. For 24-hour parking, the charge for four-wheelers is Rs. 250 while it is Rs. 100 for two-wheelers.

KMRL will also install Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) at metro stations for passenger safety.  PSDs act as a protective barrier separating the platform from the track.
