Kochi: Cochin International Airport Limited (CILA) has won national-level recognition from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) for its environment-friendly initiatives and steps for rehabilitation. Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu presented the prize to CIAL company secretary and general manager Saji K. George at a function held in New Delhi recently.

CIAL’s installation of solar panels to make the airport fully dependent on solar power is one of the key features that won the airport the prize instituted by HUDCO, according to a press release issued here. CIAL now has an installed solar power generation capacity of 21.5 MW. Around 75,000 units are generated daily through this facility, it said. The airport has generated a total of 3.75 crore units of electric power till now from the solar facility. The installed capacity for solar power generation will go up to 30 MW within three months.
