Govt Extends Scope of e-tourist Visa

New Delhi: With the intention of promoting medical tourism, the Union Government has expanded the scope of e-tourist visa to include purposes such as short-term medical treatment, business trips and conferences, and decided to rechristen it as e-visa.

Apart from tourists, businessmen and people coming for treatment or to take part in conferences will be covered under the new category of visa.

“The approval will facilitate entry of foreigners for tourism, business and medical purposes. This is expected to stimulate economic growth and increase earnings from sectors like tourism and medical value travel,” a Government statement said.

E-visa will now have a validity of 60 days. Foreign nationals can apply for it up to four months ahead of the visit.

The Cabinet also decided to extend the e-visa scheme to 8 more countries, taking the total number of nations that enjoy the facility to 158.
