Kochi: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime will spur overall development of the country, said Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Science and Technology. He was inaugurating an interactive session on GST organised by Central Excise Department here the other day.

“Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken several historic decisions. The demonetisation of high value currency notes and GST are monumental among them. GST is a law based on consensus. It will enhance GDP, create more jobs and will enable development on every front. GST is going to be a blessing in disguise for all Indians,” Harsh Vardhan said.

The Union Minister further said that the government decided to implement GST taking into consideration the larger interest of the country. “GST is good and simple tax. It will make businesses stress-free and help usher in an era of transparent business. There will be no exploitation at the hands of taxmen,” he added.

Harsh Vardhan also said that the initial problems would be solved and everyone would feel at ease with GST.
Pullela Nageswara Rao, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs, said that Kerala would gain from GST. He added that around 85 lakh businesses had to be registered for GST, of which 65 lakh business houses had already registered while another 20 lakh would be brought on board soon. “The department was doing everything possible to make the rollout of GST a smooth process,” he said.

The traders’ interaction was one of the many events being held to clarify doubts and dismiss fears about the new tax regime.
