Thiruvananthapuram: More than 2,500 coins, including those from the time of empires and princely states, are on display at a two-day international coin fair being held here.

The event organised by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) was inaugurated by Kadakampally Surendran, State Tourism Minister, on February 13.

The collections of Justin Gilbert Lopez, who holds a Guinness world record for the largest coin collection, are on display at the exhibition. Lopez, who hails from Poovar near here, has a collection of coins from 310 countries. “I have coins from even Kurdistan, a nation whose existence is still in dispute,” Lopez said.
The coins on display include those from the time of Alexander the Great, to the various Mughal, Chera, Chola emperors and Kanishka besides Persian, Roman and Islamic coins.
The coin released by Subhash Chandra Bose during the British rule, Somalian guitar-shaped coins, coins in honour of Princess Diana, flower-inscribed coins, among other rare pieces, are the other attractions.
